How to Measure Roof Pitch on an Existing House

METHOD 1 Recommended Safest Technique

Measuring from Inside the Attic (No Ladder or Roof Walking)

Measuring from inside an attic space is by far the safest and most accurate method because it eliminates fall hazards, is unaffected by wind or weather, and references the bare structural lumber rather than uneven shingles.

Required Tools

A standard 12-inch or 24-inch carpenter's torpedo level, a tape measure, and a flashlight.

Step-by-Step Procedure:
  1. Locate a clean, unobstructed common rafter (not a hip or valley rafter).
  2. Press the heel end of your 12-inch carpenter's level flat against the underside of the rafter.
  3. Adjust the level horizontally until the vial bubble is centered dead-level.
  4. From the exact 12-inch mark on your level, measure vertically upward with your tape measure until you touch the bottom edge of the rafter.
  5. The vertical distance in inches equals the pitch number X in X:12. For instance, if the vertical measurement reads 6 inches, your pitch is 6:12.
METHOD 2 Exterior Ladder Access

Measuring Against the Exterior Gable Rake Fascia

If your attic has no crawlspace access or is packed with blown-in cellulose insulation, measuring the exterior gable rake fascia board is the next best alternative.

  1. Set up an extension ladder on firm, level ground against the gable end wall (follow the 4-to-1 ladder angle safety rule).
  2. Hold your 12-inch level horizontally against the sloped rake fascia trim board.
  3. Level the tool so the bubble is centered.
  4. Measure vertically from the 12-inch mark up to the underside of the sloped fascia board.
  5. The vertical reading in inches is your pitch number.
METHOD 3 Exterior Roof Surface

Measuring Directly on the Exterior Shingle Surface

Safety Warning:
Do not attempt this method on roofs steeper than 6:12 without OSHA-compliant fall protection harnesses, roof jacks, or safety ropes. Never walk on wet, frosty, or morning-dew roof surfaces.

Place the high end of your level on top of the shingles pointing straight down the roof slope. Level the bubble, then measure down vertically from the 12-inch mark on the level to the shingle below. Because shingle tabs have thickness laps (around 1/8" to 1/4"), measure in two different locations to verify consistency.

METHOD 4 Zero-Risk Ground Assessment

Measuring from the Ground with a Camera or Smartphone

When accessing the roof or attic is impossible, you can determine roof pitch from the ground with high accuracy using photographic geometry:

  • Stand directly perpendicular to the gable end of the house, approximately 30 to 50 feet away to avoid optical perspective keystoning.
  • Ensure your camera phone is held strictly level (align the horizon or wall studs with the camera gridlines).
  • Snap a high-resolution photo of the gable triangle.
  • Open the photo in a digital angle protractor tool or image editor, and measure the rake angle against the horizontal eave line.
