Model building codes establish strict slope boundaries because gravitational runoff velocity directly dictates whether water will drain harmlessly away or back up under overlapping shingles via capillary draw and wind force:

2. The 2:12 and 4:12 Shingle Thresholds (IRC R905.2)
Two key slope thresholds govern the vast majority of North American residential roofs:
- The 2:12 Absolute Floor: Section R905.2.2 of the IRC explicitly mandates: "Asphalt shingles shall be applied only on roof slopes of 2:12 (one-sixth slope) or greater." Attempting to install shingles below 2:12 violates code, invalidates manufacturer warranties, and virtually guarantees water leaks.
- The 2:12 to 4:12 Enhanced Underlayment Rule: For slopes from 2:12 up to but not including 4:12, Section R905.1.1 requires either two layers of asphalt felt underlayment applied shingle-fashion with a 19-inch overlap, or a continuous single layer of self-adhering polymer-modified bitumen membrane over the entire deck.
3. Ice Barrier Protection (IRC R905.1.2)
In geographic regions where the average daily temperature in January is 25°F (-4°C) or less, or where there is a documented history of ice dam formation, building codes mandate an ice barrier:
- Must consist of a self-adhering polymer-modified bitumen sheet.
- Must extend from the lowest roof edge to a point at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line of the heated building envelope.
- Lower pitch roofs (such as 3:12 to 5:12) are significantly more susceptible to ice damming because of thicker snow accumulation and slower gravitational runoff.
